The Hungarian Edition Of Cosmopolitan Essays - Cosmopolitan
The Hungarian Edition Of Cosmopolitan TABLE OF CONTENTS ABSTRACT 3 OVERVIEW OF THE HUNGARIAN MARKET 3 BACKGROUND 4 DESCRIPTION OF THE PRODUCT 4 THE CONCEPT OF THE PRODUCT 4 PROFILE OF THE TARGET CONSUMERS 5 CURRENT MARKET SITUATION 5 SWOT ANALYSIS 5 PEST ANALYSIS 6 STRUCTURE OF THE MAGAZINE 6 PRICING STRATEGY 7 PROMOTION MIX 7 ADVERTISING 7 SALES PROMOTION 8 PUBLIC RELATIONS 9 CONCLUSIONS 9 APPENDIX 10 LIST OF SOURCES 17 ABSTRACT Primarily based on an interview with Ms. Eniko Horvath, marketing manager of Cosmopolitan Hungary, this case study outlines the historical background of Cosmopolitan international editions and the peculiarities of the Hungarian version. The first issue brought about a revolution in the general approach of women's magazines in Hungary; Cosmopolitan immediately reached a leading market position that it still holds today. The paper discusses the layout and content of the magazine in an attempt to thoroughly describe this product. It illustrates some patterns of the magazine in terms of sales, number of subscribers and number of copies given out freely for promotional purposes. The pricing policy and the promotion mix adopted by Cosmopolitan as parts of its overall marketing strategy, are presented as well. We conclude that Cosmopolitan is a successful business in today's glossy magazines market in Hungary, since each upcoming issue is impatiently awaited by thousands of readers each mon th. OVERVIEW OF THE HUNGARIAN MARKET In Hungary the first magazines for women were published in the middle of the 19th Century. In the name of emancipation, Hungarian women demanded more women's magazines, fashion and beauty-care products. At that moment there were around 1,500 magazines on the market and their advertisements were mainly done through first-class fashion salons. After World War I, the so-called feminine press started to fade away and cultural magazines slowly took over. During the socialist era, a new type of magazines appeared on the Hungarian market and remained dominant for 40 years. One of them is still among the leading Hungarian magazines for women and is called Nok Lapja. After it's very first issue in 1949, it was declared to be a good, useful and essential magazine for honest, hard-working Hungarian women and remained so until the 1960's, when it also incorporated some elements of the Western culture. The economical and political changes which occurred in the past 10 years deeply affected the magazines market. The feminine press made a tremendous comeback, giving birth to newcomers and forcing old magazines to change. At present one can find more than 50 magazines dedicated to women readers. Some of them deal with so-called women issues in general, whereas some specialize in fashion, cooking, needlework and home decorating. In a market economy, magazines are like any other product, says Andrea Eszes, editor of Cosmopolitan. And products targeting women can make big profits in Hungary. If we just compare how much is spent on advertising each year in Hungary with the budget of the Ministry of Culture or that of the Ministry of National Defense, there is no wonder that this market is a primary business target for investors. The future holds fine prospects to these international glossy magazines that are published all over the world and combine some common characteristics with specific cultural elements of the host countries. But as they emerge and leave cultural magazines behind, they will bear the increasing responsibility of correcting the language usage and promoting visual culture to the public. BACKGROUND Cosmopolitan was founded in 1886 as a magazine for first-class families in the U.S. William Randolph Hearst acquired the magazine in 1905. In the middle of the century sales dropped and the management decided to change the concept of the magazine. Ever since, the Cosmopolitan concept - the magazine is for young women interested in fashion, beauty, career and sex has been alive. Helen Gurley Brown, who was appointed Editor in Chief in 1965, approached the idea of Cosmopolitan as a magazine for ambitious, career-conscious young women and even wrote a feminist best-seller. Today there are 37 international editions, making Cosmopolitan the largest selling young women's magazine in the whole world. It has an average of nearly 7 million buyers universally and more than 33 million readers per month. This gives Cosmopolitan the status of the first international first-class magazine. The Hungarian edition of Cosmopolitan was launched in November 1997, in accordance with the agreement between Hearst Corporation/VNU and

Czech Republic Essays - McCarthyism, Free Essays, Term Papers
Czech Republic Essays - McCarthyism, Free Essays, Term Papers Czech Republic Senator Joseph McCarthys political career was in danger when he walked into the Colony Restaurant in Washington, DC for dinner with three of his friends. The date was January 7, 1950. A month earlier, he had been voted worst U.S. Senator in a poll of Senate correspondents. In his earlier years as Senator, he had been known for taking loans and funds from businesses totaling $30,000. This included the Pepsi-Cola company, which earned him the nickname Pepsi-Cola Joe1, and the Lustron Corporation, which dealt in prefabricated houses. About this time McCarthy was also deemed responsible for the resignation of Senate subcommittee chairman Raymond E. Baldwin, who left politics citing McCarthys abuse towards him during the Malmedy WWII hearings the last straw 2. Not only was his political career in danger, but McCarthy was also suffering from financial troubles. He had squandered all the money from his political funds into soybean investments and horse racing, which left him nearly broke3. With these things in mind, McCarthy and his three associates- William Roberts, a Washington lawyer; Charles Kraus, a political science professor at Georgetown; and Father Edmund Walsh, a dean also at George University set out to discover that fateful night what could possibly rejuvenate the political career of Joseph McCarthy before the upcoming election of 52. The trio of Roberts, Kraus, and Walsh recommended that McCarthy should try taking up a cause, and to do so seriously and passionately. But what should it be? Ideas and issues were tossed about the group concerning old age pension to the St. Lawrence Seaway. McCarthy dismissed them all. But then Walsh suggested communism, and McCarthys ears realized that they had just struck gold. Thats it! exclaimed an excited McCarthy. The government is full of Communists. We can hammer away at them. 4 And with that statement, Senator Joseph McCarthys witchhunt against communism had begun. 33 days later in Wheeling, West Virginia, Senator Joseph McCarthy stood on a podium before the Ohio Valley Womens Republican Club. I have in my hand, he began, a list of 205 card-carrying Communists who are now employed in the State Department and whose identities are well known to the State Department as being members of the Communist party. 5 On that night his life, as well as the lives of many other Americans, would forever change. McCarthy would begin a brief but astounding crusade against the so-called Communist infiltration of the U.S. government. During a span of about 4 years, McCarthy accused hundreds of government and former government workers of being Communist with little or no concrete evidence. Even so, McCarthy was able to win many convictions and victories without much protest and opposition. Why did McCarthy go relatively unscathed throughout his witchhunt until he was finally censured by the Senate in 1954? According to a nationwide poll taken during the era of McCarthyism, 50% of those polled said they approved of his methods, with 21% undecided6. What allowed him to do this for so long with the approval rather than the condemnation of the people? The key to the success and tolerance of McCarthy was due to a combination of several things. First, there was the recent espionage cases of Hiss and the Rosenbergs. McCarthy also greatly benefited from the pro-McCarthy media, which took up and glamorized his cause. There was also the fact that communism was in many cases a viable scapegoat for a frightened and restless people. McCarthyism was also Americanism; it represented the duty of the patriotic American. McCarthyism became an offensive tool against the threat of the spread of communism. At the time of McCarthys infamous Wheeling speech, the nation had just learned that the threat of Communists in high level positions in Washington was in fact real. Alger Hiss, a former State Department official and at the time President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, had been convicted of perjury just one month prior to McCarthys speech7. Whittaker Chambers, a former Communist himself, had charged Hiss with supplying classified information to the Soviet Union. The guilty verdict in this case rose many eyebrows and gave many people cause for alarm. A couple of months later, McCarthys cause was helped along even more by the arrests of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg8. Julius Rosenberg, an army electrical engineer, and his wife, Ethel, were both arrested in the spring of 1950. The two had given sketch blueprints of the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union back in 1945, which had accelerated Soviet development of the atomic bomb. The Soviets managed

Top 5 Websites for Your Job Search Over the Holidays
Top 5 Websites for Your Job Search Over the Holidays Most job seekers conduct their search by applying for positions posted on various job search websites. They might look on LinkedIn, monster, indeed, or one of many industry-specific sites and identify appropriate jobs. While this tactic is an essential part of every job search, and while some people find jobs this way, the competition is enormous. If you saw the job online, so did hundreds or thousands of other qualified candidates who are also throwing their hat in the ring. For many, a more fruitful job search strategy is to identify companies where you want to work, then approach them regarding what you have to offer. This ââ¬Å"hidden job searchâ⬠strategy has been effective for thousands of professionals who have created their dream job. To conduct a ââ¬Å"hidden job search,â⬠the first step is to create a list of target companies. This practice, which requires a lot of research, allows you to take control of your search instead of letting the internet dictate what jobs you apply for. The next step is to identify the people you are connected with at those companies and to contact them to start conversations. The holidays are a perfect time to do some valuable research on what companies you might want to work for. Here are my 5 top recommended websites for your job search over the holidays: 1.à LinkedIn.com. LinkedIn is probably the best site for discovering your connections at any company. First, search for companies using the search bar and dropping down to Companies. Type in your keywords or the company name to get a list of companies that fit your target. Once you choose a company you want to research, go to the company page where you will be informed of ââ¬Å"How Youââ¬â¢re Connectedâ⬠to the people at that company. For instance, when I go to the Dell page, I am informed that I have 5 first-degree connections (including the Talent Acquisition Senior Advisor in Phoenix) and 4,406 second-degree connections there. If I wanted to know what itââ¬â¢s like to work at Dell, Iââ¬â¢d have quite a few people to reach out to! à On the company page for most mid- to large-sized companies, you can look at the Careers tab to find out what jobs are available there. And if you want to get the companyââ¬â¢s news, click on Follow to get their updates. à Challenge: There is no ââ¬Å"Advanced Searchâ⬠available for Companies, so you are not able to search based on location or other more refined terms. 2.à CareerCloud.com. This site collects news articles (newspaper headlines, online media, and press releases) that indicate company expansion and restructuring. In other words, it saves you the work of doing a google search to find out what jobs might be opening up in your industry. From the home page, click on the Hidden Jobs app and you will be able to choose any U.S. state to see whoââ¬â¢s hiring in that state. Then click on ââ¬Å"view sourceâ⬠to read the news. Itââ¬â¢s free! Challenge: No ability to search by city, only state; and you donââ¬â¢t know what level of position might be available until you read the source material. 3.à Manta.com. From the bottom section of Mantaââ¬â¢s home page, you can search for both U.S. and à non-U.S. companies by either industry or location. You can then filter your results by Company Revenue, Number of Employees, Type of Ownership (Public or Private), and Location Type (Headquarters, Branch or Single Location). Within any given industry, you can browse by location as well. You will get the companyââ¬â¢s website and snail mail address and youââ¬â¢ll have the option to ââ¬Å"Follow companyâ⬠(an option that requires you to set up a free account). Challenge: Although manta is a great tool for research, I donââ¬â¢t see the value of building a network here if you have a robust LinkedIn network. Without a network, you wonââ¬â¢t find a lot of information about people who work at any given company. 4.à ZoomInfo.com. From ZoomInfoââ¬â¢s home page, scroll down to the section that says ââ¬Å"Browse ZoomInfoââ¬â¢s company directoryâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ You can search in the US or Canada for companies by industry and then by city. You can then click on any of the search results to found out a companyââ¬â¢s address, web address, revenue and number of employees; look a bit further to discover title and contact information of key employees. With a free profile (Community Edition), you can view up to 80 contacts per month. Challenge: Some of the information on this site is out of date. Links to companies often do not work. Also, the initial list of companies is merely alphabetical and does not have any filtering options, so you may find yourself clicking on company names rather blindly. 5.à Glassdoor.com. If youââ¬â¢re looking for inside information on any company, this is the site for you. Click on the Companies tab, enter the name of a company and its location, and youââ¬â¢ll get an overall company rating by company employees, a list of salary ranges for various positions (a magic bullet for that dreaded ââ¬Å"Salary Requirementsâ⬠question!), reviews by employees including pros, cons, advice to senior management, and whether the person would recommend the company to a friend, and information about the companyââ¬â¢s interview process and questions. For full functionality, youââ¬â¢ll need to create an account. Iââ¬â¢d say itââ¬â¢s worth it for the interview and salary information alone! The site also has job listings. Challenge: The site is more integrated with Facebook than LinkedIn so you might not be able to find your professional connections at a company without logging in separately to LinkedIn. Also, itââ¬â¢s hard to tell whether information provided by company employees could be skewed. Using a combination of all these resources for your research will give you a remarkable amount of information and will put you worlds beyond the average job seeker in terms of your confidence and preparedness in your job search. Isnââ¬â¢t getting this kind of ammunition worth spending a bit of time during the holidays? Please let me know what sites youââ¬â¢ve found the most useful for your job search research. And have a wonderful holiday! Category:Job SearchBy Brenda BernsteinDecember 23, 2013

Preserving illinois wetlands Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Preserving illinois wetlands - Essay Example The achievement of the measures will be put in to analysis together with how the goals and objectives of wetlands preservation in Illinois have been effective. Wetlands conservation is of international concern because they are transitional area between the open water and the dry land. They serve many function such recharging the ground and sea water, providing habitats to fish and other aquatic organisms, they also protect floods damage and improves water quality by purifying to reduce on chemicals and other harmful bodies. These benefits increase the need to preserve the wetlands. There has been establishment of Illinois Wetlands Conservation Strategy (IWCS) which is a comprehensive plan to guide the implementation and development the wetlands protection initiatives. The goal of the IWCS is to ensure there are no losses of wetlands or the functional value of wetlands is lost. Their objective is to develop and implement an ecosystem strategy that is directed towards protection, restoration and conservation of wetlands (Dunne & Knapp, 11-26). Agencies such Ducks unlimited introduced a method where it would purchase land from original owners to safe it from destruction. The government funds those agencies that work towards conservation of the wetlands which acts as a motivator to agencies to work towards such a course (Mitsch & Gosselink, 24-36). The measures have been effective in conservation of the wetlands. Ducks unlimited have registered success where it have bought the encroached land from their original owners and uses them as homes for ducks and other birds. IWSC have registered success in its implementation of the various policies which it has formulated to protect and conserve wetlands. The agencies have registered success in restoration of the wetlands where they have been able to buy land and plants trees and other plantations which will act as habitat for animals and birds. The government policy to fund agencies has

Patient Safety in a Hospital Research
Patient Safety in a Hospital Research Attitudes toward incident reporting. Attitudes and perceived barriers to incident reporting among tertiary level health professionals were researched by Malik, Alam, Mir, Abbas (2010) to address the limited incident reporting framework in Pakistan. A random sample of 217 doctors and nurses in Shifa International Hospitals were given a modified version of the AHRQââ¬â¢s questionnaire to determine various factors that influence health professionalsââ¬â¢ reporting behaviors, with an important focus of the study on barriers to incident reporting. Results of the study found that only 20% of house officers are willing to report, and greater than 95% of consultants, registrars, medical officers, and nurses are willing to report incidents related to them. ââ¬ËAdministration sanctionââ¬â¢ was identified as a common barrier among doctors (69%) and nurses (67%). Additionally, reporting to the head of the department was preferred by doctors (60%) and nurses (80%). Based on the study ââ¬â¢s findings, the researchers suggest that implementation of future incident reporting systems should consider supportive work environments, prompt feedback, and immunity from administration (Malik, Alam, Mir, Abbas, 2010). Intensive Care Unit Registered Nursesââ¬â¢ perceptions of patient safety climate and potential predictors for patient safety perception and incident reporting were explored in a cross-sectional study by Ballangrud, Hedelin, Hall-Lord (2012). In ten ICUs in six hospitals in Norway, 220 nurses (72%) responded to the questionnaire, The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture. The questionnaire measured seven unit level and three hospital level patient safety climate dimensions, along with two outcome items. Of the 12 dimensions, 7 achieved a RN proportion of positive scores (over 55%), and 5 achieved a lower proportion. Among types of units and between hospitals, significant differences in RNsââ¬â¢ perceptions of patient safety were found. Unit level variables were found to have had significant impact on the outcome dimensions, ââ¬Å"overall perception of safetyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"frequency of incident reporting,â⬠in which both had a 32% total variance. However, among the outcome variables, differences were found in positive scores on ââ¬Å"overall perception of safetyâ⬠(69%) and ââ¬Å"frequency of incident reportingâ⬠(18%). In all dimensions, the total average of positive scores was 55%. This study concluded that patient safety climate was most positive among ICU RNs at the unit level, and areas for improvement include: ââ¬Å"incident reporting, feedback and communication about errors, and organizational learning and continuous improvementâ⬠(p. 352). This study identifies several limitations. In contrast to other Norwegian HSPOSC studies, which included various health care professionals, this studyââ¬â¢s sample only included RNs. Additionally, generalizability is limited since the hospitals in this study were small and within a limited area of Norway. Another limitation to this study that may have impacted the results was the known implementation of reorganization across units that were to occur after data collection. Perceptions of patient safety culture. In China, healthcare workersââ¬â¢ attitudes and perceptions of patient safety culture were explored using a modified version of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSPSC), which measured 10 patient safety culture dimensions. Out of the 1500 questionnaires that were distributed to primarily internal physicians and nurses among 32 hospitals in China, valid responses were received from 1160 health care workers. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS 17.0 and Microsoft Excel 2007, including descriptive statistics, along with analysis of the surveyââ¬â¢s validity and reliability. Two separate investigators entered and verified data independently. For each item, results included a positive response rate range of 36% to 89%. On 5 dimensions (Teamwork Within Units, Organization Learning-Continuous Improvement, Communication Openness, Non-punitive Response and Teamwork Across Units), the positive response rate was higher when compared to AHRQ data (P In a research study among 42 Taiwan hospitals, the HSOPSC questionnaire was used by Chen Li (2010) to examine the 12 patient safety culture dimensions. A total of 788 physicians, nurses, and non-clinical staff completed the survey. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS 15.0 for Windows and Amos 7 software tools. Positive perceptions were found toward patient safety culture among Taiwan hospital staff, in which percentage of positive response rates were highest among ââ¬Å"teamwork within units,â⬠and lowest in the ââ¬Å"staffingâ⬠dimension. Taiwan and the US differed in the following three dimensions: Feedback and communication about error, Communication openness, and Frequency of event reporting. Several strengths and weaknesses were identified in this study. When compared to the original AHRQ database, which included large samples in various health care organizations, this studyââ¬â¢s data had a lower internal consistency. The use of the HSOPSC questionnaire is both a strength and limitation in this study. Although the HSOPSCââ¬â¢s strong psychometric properties and broad safety culture coverage are considered strengths, the use of this questionnaire in Taiwan is also a limitation of this study because of its use in a cultural setting different from where it was developed. However, it is important to note that the application of the HSOPSC in Taiwan was found to be a good fit according to most of the confirmatory factor analysis indices. Based on their findings, Chen Li (2010) point out that, ââ¬Å"the existence of discrepancies between the US data and the Taiwanese data suggest that cultural uniqueness should be taken into consideration whenever safety culture measurement tools are applied in different cultural settingsâ⬠(p. 1). Not only is future research recommended to expand the survey in Taiwan, but also to consider measurements that will decipher individual and group perceptions and interactions related to patient safety c ulture.

Burlesque
To what extent did burlesque impact the development of the 20th American musicals? Burlesque shows had a big influence on the development of 20th century musicals in many ways. One of the ways it did this was changing the role that woman had within musicals. This is a result of the woman's rights movement In America. It is backed up in a Robert G Allen quote where he says ââ¬Å"burlesque's principal legacy as a cultural form was its establishment of patterns of gender representation that forever changed the role of the woman on the American stageâ⬠.Previous of burlesque shows, It was less acceptable for woman to show much of their skin/boodles, they were often seen as Innocent and delicate so wore long dresses to cover themselves. However burlesque brought light on to the sexiness of woman without It being too distasteful; they did this by putting the woman In less clothing or more see through clothing such as tights, as a way of teasing the audience.Burlesque also helped women to gain more control In other ways as most of the burlesque troupes were managed by males therefore they would be making the decisions, however In the sass males began to take control and wanted burlesque dancers to show as much skin as possible without actually striping. Woman taking control is demonstrated in the late sass's when Lydia Thompson burlesque troupe became one of New Work's biggest theatrical sensations. Their first hit was named Zion in 1868 where they included travesty; woman playing men's roles in tights.Due to such high demands for tickets to this show it then moved to Broadway. Thompson didn't hire any composers for the how she simply used songs that were relevant and popular at the time, which was a big influence to American musicals as it happened frequently in 20th century musicals. It is also arguable that burlesque impacted the development of the 20th century American musicals as it wasn't Just a dance routine showing off women's bodies, it also involved ele ments of comedy and music which is a big element of book musicals in 20th century America.Burlesque infuses these elements by using things such as travesty and they also use their shows to mock the upper class as their main audiences were lower and middle class. The comedy within the shows also helped society to become more acceptable with the fact that the woman had less clothes on as usual which was frequent in many American musicals in the 20th century. It Is also said that burlesque had a big influence on creating book musicals as they also combined the 3 elements of dance, music and drama. One of the first book musicals being the black crook, involved burlesque style dances. Burlesque By Chloe had within musicals. This is a result of the woman's rights movement in America.
